The current word provides not only a bit of word about the new iPhone, which is said to be packing an A5X processor along with a full gig of RAM for that extra speed boost, and word is they?re being tested in iPhone 4S cases so as to throw off the tipsters. The final release is said to be significantly different, case-wise, than either of the last two releases from Apple. It?s still essentially at the prototype stages right now, so naturally, anything could change about this, including nothing at all, by the time the final launch comes around. That particular date is still projected for the end of the year.
But the news that?s really raising some eyebrows?or maybe even iBrows?is the reports that Apple?s working on a new iPod Touch. A snippet of code located in an iOS 5.1 build details what?s being referred to as the iPod 5,1. This is noteworthy in that the most current iPod Touch release is referred to as the iPod 4,1 in the same notes. A jump like this implies significant hardware changes, though just what those changes will be, or whether or not this ever even sees the light of day, are somewhat up in the air. If the iPod Touch were to get a similar processor revamping as the iPad and the iPhone have recently had, well, we could be looking at one of the most powerful personal media devices around.
It would be interesting to see a personal media device with that kind of punch, especially as the iPod Touch is seldom regarded as a productivity tool like the iPhone and iPad often are. And considering the iPod Touch?s popularity as a portable gaming platform, well, that could do some very exciting things toward Apple?s gaming ambitions.
