Captec at the Forefront of Medical Computers | Captec Industrial ...

As with all parts of life, computers are increasingly involved with the treatment and diagnosis of patient conditions and at Captec we are at the forefront of supplying compliant medical computers for the clinical environment.? There are a number of phases where we operate:

Phase 1: Diagnosis. This is where tests are carried out to diagnose the patient condition. ?Increasingly this is portable or trolley mount devices where the embedded computer and other electronics require battery back up with a long duty cycle for a typical hospital day shift. The computer is required to control the stages of the test and to record key data. ?Often a diagnosis can be indicated directly but, sometimes it is necessary to transfer the data to other computers where collaborative information is held. This kind of diagnosis is already being carried out remotely and in some cases equipment can be provided to the home; making hospital visits unnecessary.

Phase 2: Treatment. This can involve a range of medical devices and a number of iterations of treatment which must be carefully planned and recorded. Where high value capital equipment is used for treatment, the computer is often embedded into the equipment and is required to have a lifetime expectation of 5 years during which any specification change is very undesirable. System downtime is very expensive and disruptive for patients so high levels of reliability and availability are required.

Phase 3: Imaging. This involves equipment with high resolution graphics and large memory capacity for the acquisition and storage of images, such as x-rays. ?Often it is necessary to retain data in a local RAID array. For the efficient, joined up operation of all stakeholders, including remote GP?s, data must be shared and this is achieved using the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). I recently had the misfortune to break my arm but was impressed how quickly the x-ray images were shared ? I could even have my own copy on CD for a ?10 charge.

All computers used within clinical environments are required to adhere to very strict safety standards and stringent evaluation is carried out by an accredited body before a certificate can be given to the product. ?Furthermore the manufacturing process is vetted and Captec are subject to unannounced inspection to ensure that standards are maintained.

Frequently a network of computing technology, which is embedded into complex medical equipment, does not form part of the hospitals IT infrastructure. ?This can mean that the equipment is not protected from viruses. To combat this Captec have developed the NSS (Network security device), this is essentially an integrated computer and network switch with local software which protects devices connected to the switch, and this can also provide local storage and has a dedicated link to the hospital network.
