Emily's list: AmEx card + Twitter hashtags = deals

Earlier this week, American Express announced that it is launching a new program that allows cardholders to access exclusive deals by using Twitter hashtags (text with a "#" before it). It's the first time I've heard of a credit card issuer doing something so social media-savvy.

How does it work? First, cardholders go to sync.americanexpress.com/twitter to sync their Twitter accounts with their American Express cards. To find the list of current hashtag offers from American Express, view their favorites list on Twitter. AmEx Card + Twitter Hashtags = Deals

When cardholders decide on a deal they want and tweet using the indicated special offer hashtags, those are synced onto their AmEx card. "Then, when card members use their synced card for qualifying purchases online or in-store at participating merchants, the savings are automatically delivered via a statement credit within days," according to American Express.

Their list of major-name participating merchant partners include Best Buy, The Cheesecake Factory, McDonald's, H&M, FedEx Office, Whole Foods Market, Virgin America and Zappos. For example, here is a current deal from Whole Foods Market: "Tweet #AmexWholefoods get 1-$20 credit w/single purchase in store of $75+ on synced AmexCard thru 4/30 QtyLtd See terms." I would do that in a heartbeat if I had an AmEx card -- that is huge savings!

The famous South by Southwest conference starts here in Austin this week. During the interactive portion of the conference, which focuses on tech and social media, American Express will showcase the new Twitter experience during a special, nationally live-streamed concert from SXSW March 12 at 7 p.m. Central featuring Jay-Z, according to the issuer.

"The Amex Sync Show will be broadcast live at youtube.com/americanexpress and also be available on the VEVO mobile and tablet platform."

I'm really happy to see AmEx incorporating social media with deals for cardholders, especially since they are so easy to redeem. Why didn't anyone think of this earlier?
