College football notes: New Hampshire linebacker wins Buck Buchanan

New Hampshire junior linebacker Matt Evans won the Buck Buchanan Award winner Thursday night as the Football Championship Subdivision?s outstanding defensive player. ?

He led FCS players with 154 tackles and 88 solo stops. ?

?I just try, and want to be, the best player I can be,? Evans said. ?If I play well and get those honors, that is just added incentive. Obviously, it means more to me for the team to have a better season.?

Evans appeared on 113 of the 132 ballots and received 45 first-place votes. Northern Iowa senior linebacker L.J. Fort was seconds in the voting. He was the second straight season a player from the Missouri Valley Football Conference was in the top three. Western Illinois linebacker Kyle Glazier was third last season. Illinois State fixture Boomer Grigsby was second in 2004.

Towson running back Terrance West won the inaugural Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman. West ran for 1,294 yards and an FCS-high 29 rushing touchdowns. ?

Also, Towson coach Rob Ambrose won the Eddie Robinson Award as the coach of the year. The Tigers were 9-3 and won the Colonial Athletic Association title after finishing 2-9 and 1-10 in Ambrose?s first two seasons. ?

On Saturday night, Sam Houston State will face North Dakota State in the division championship game in Frisco, Texas. ?

COLLEGE BALL: Wisconsin running back Montee Ball is coming back for his senior season. He told reporters that NFL evaluators informed him he would likely be a third-round draft pick and he thinks he can improve his stock.

?I?m just listening to my heart,? Ball said Thursday. ?I know for a fact I will come into this season better. No one knows what we?re capable of this season but I know I made the right decision. ... Maybe I?m not ready to leave all this behind. Right now my heart lies with the Badger family more than the NFL.?

He scored 39 touchdowns this season, tying Barry Sanders? NCAA record. He finished the year with 1,923 yards rushing and 2,229 all-purpose yards. ?

Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy has also decided to skip his senior season and enter the draft.
